Academics
As a Japanese Language and International Business major at Clemson University, I have studied a variety of disciplines. I have acquired competencies in Japanese linguistics, literature, culture, and business, as well as explored the domestic and international dimensions of these selected topics. Upon graduation, I will have studied Japanese at the college level for four years, including a full year in Japan. ​Below, you will find a summary of the courses I took while at Clemson University , as well as Chukyo Univerisity in Japan. In the Coursework tab, you will find a collection of samples of the work I completed in various classes to demonstrate my linguistic proficiency, literature, business and culture competency.
Japanese Language Courses
​JAPN 2010, 2020 - Intermediate Japanese
Intermediate courses to build upon elementary Japanese, with conversation, composition, and introduction of more serious reading of Japanese in short stories. JAPN 2020, continues incorporating more advanced grammar, speaking, and listening practice using conversation, composition, and dictation based on more difficult Japanese reading selections. The Kanji writing system is more heavily emphasized.
JAPN 3160 Japanese for International Business I
Spoken and written Japanese common to the Japanese-speaking world of business and industry emphasizing business practices and writing and translating business letters and professional reports. Cross-cultural references provide opportunity for comparative and contrastive analysis of American and Japanese cultural patterns in a business setting.
Advanced Japanese Language IV and V
These courses were taken at Chukyo University in Japan. Six separate Japanese language courses taught advanced sentence patterns and a wide range of vocabulary to be able to express more complex topics. Reading comprehension materials about Japanese society and culture are used to teach students to write longer and more
persuasive reports. Practicing words and expressions, students listen to and speak in Japanese conversations while in familiar situations.
JAPN 3050, 3060 - Japanese Conversation & Composition
Practice in the spoken language with emphasis on vocabulary, Kanji, pronunciation, and comprehension; learning practical language skills and intercultural communication through various topics. JAPN 3060 offers more practice and is a continuation of JAPN 3050. Learn more complex sentence structure, gain skill in reading longer passages, and composing multiple essays on various topics. The Kanji writing system is continued.
JAPN 4160 - Japanese for International Business II
Study of language and cultural environment of the Japanese-speaking market, including the linguistic and cultural idioms that support global marketing in general and the international marketing of textiles, agricultural products, and tourism in particular.
Introduction to Linguistics
This course was taken at Chukyo University in Japan. This course studied what language is and what knowledge of language consists of. The course covered the major
subfields of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The course is designed to help students understand the basics of the scientific and
theoretical study of the human language.
Culture & Literature Courses
JAPN 3070 Japanese Civilization
Study of the significant aspects of the culture of Japan. This course focused on the inner works of how modern-day Japan has evolved overtime through the ages. Researching art, religion, societal standards, global developments, history, and more to further comprehend the Japan of today.
JAPN 4170 Japanese Culture & Society
Course focused on exploring Japanese historical, social, and cultural development of Japan. Examining key aspects such as traditions, values, religion, art, and modern societal trends.
Global Media & Culture
This course was taken at Chukyo University in Japan. The course examines the cultural consequences of media consolidation in its relation as a central role in the globalization process with a particular emphasis on cultural change in all aspects of modern life.
JAPN 4010 Japanese Literature in Translation
Introduction to Japanese literature from 712 AD to the present. Cultivates an appreciation for Japanese literature and culture.
History of Modern Japan
This course was taken at Chukyo University in Japan. The course presented Japan's history between the mid-19th century and the second half of the 20th century. The focus was both on internal political transformations and on international involvement or interactions with other countries.
Business Courses
MATH 1020 Business Calculus I
The first half of Business Calculus focused on reading and understanding graphs, formulas, and equations using business examples.
ACCT 2010 Financial Accounting Concepts
An introductory course to accounting that focused on the application of financial data and understanding financial statements, along with the various steps to ensure correct and ethical reporting.
The Global Economy
Course taken at Chukyo University in Japan. Studies of the process of international commerce. Covers basic theory of trade and exchange rates, institutional and legal
environment, current policy issues.
MKT 3020 Consumer Behavior
Course based on understanding specific concepts of individual and group behavioral sciences and their application to the understanding of consumer decision making.
PRTM 3080 Leadership and Group Processes in Recreation
Leadership is analyzed through experience-based learning. Examine various styles of leadership and communication and their probable consequences. Consider techniques
for planning large and small group meetings. Examines literature in the field of leadership and group processes.
ENGL 3040 Business Writing
Introduction to understanding, context, purpose, and writing strategies for professional business settings, such as memoranda, letters, reports, and proposals. Included
individual and team projects.
LAIB 4000 Language & Int’l Business Internship
Mandatory internship with an international company in the United States or abroad. Course representative of student’s experience, for a minimum of 140 hours. Focus is on working within a Japanese company and learning the standards and skills needed for the workplace. Upon completion of internship, students will write a report in the
student’s target language.
MATH 2070 Business Calculus II
The second half of Business calculus focused on the business aspects of calculus such as economics and quantities.
ECON 2110, 2120 Principles of Microeconomics &
Macroeconomics
Introduction to economic reasoning and its application to the study of the behavior of consumers and business firms. Topics include competition, monopoly, international
trade, and the impact of selected public policies. ECON 2120 focused on economic principles to study overall economic performance, including factors affecting inflation, unemployment, and growth.
MKT 3010 Principles of Marketing
Course based on Principles and concepts involved in planning, pricing, promoting, and distributing of goods and services.
MKT 4270 - International Marketing
Study of marketing from an international point of view. Emphasis is on the necessary modification of marketing thinking and practice for foreign markets due to individual
environmental differences.
PTRM 3450 Tourism Management
The course examines the management issues associated with offering tourism products and experiences to travelers by the private and public sectors for the purpose of
enhancing visitor opportunities, making a profit and affecting change in a destination.
LAIB 1270 Intro to Lang & Int’ Business
Introduction to the major while learning how to prepare for the business world and conducting research on target language, culture, and internship.
LANG 4990 Language Portfolio
Students create a digital portfolio to demonstrate competencies in reasoning, critical thinking, problem solving skills, cross-cultural awareness, and ethical judgment. Documentation highlights the study abroad and internship experience, while serving as a resource for academic and professional development.
